I honestly love you so much, such an inspiring soul, and insightful. I’m starting my curly hair journey and big chopped this month and what I needs to hear was to let go of expectations and to stop comparing, after I started doing that things have only gone uphill. Thank you ❤️❤️

    • Bronwyn Floyd
Bronwyn Floyd 5 months ago +2

I agree so much!!! I've been comparing, and hoping my curls would magically behave and form up like someone else's. I'm slowly embracing that they have a mind of their own and are gonna do their own thing.

Hey, I want to start my curly hair journey but I did a chemical straightening on my hair about nine months ago. I recently had a big chop and my hair became a little bit wavy but I'm scared my curls won't come back. Has anyone expierence with chemical straightening and getting their curls back? I would be really grateful for some helpful advice. :-)

Does anyone have a problem with the heat from their head straightening/frizzy the hair that is under the top curls??? I have 3b high porosity hair, and in some places, like the lower section (underside) I have a higher density of hair and is a different curl type (wide waves) and straightens first. My hair is fine, but I have a lot of it (high density). I do not use heat, I don’t dye my hair, I use a denman brush to style. I use both Deva Curl and Aveda products. I use a satin bonnet and a silk pillow case. This issue is driving me crazy!!

glad you mentioned the scalp massage - this is key - i use a little sorbolene on my finger tips as my hair is going grey in places and is really dry at the roots there now. another thing is aloe vera gel for sore or itchy scalp is great because it doesn't damage your hair - it's actually good for your hair and washes out easily

A clarifying shampoo is sooooo important. I didn't need one until I moved countries. I thought I had horrible dandruff, but dandruff shampoos weren't helping. I was like "whats going on with my hair!!!!!" Finally found out about clarifying shampoos, wheeeeeew. Lol

    Edit to add
Actually. I researched the crap out of so many products and would have a hard making the final decision on which product to go with. The results would be OK. Guess who would come along with some shampoo he found at the store and thought that the oils and claims on it looked good? My husband. And the results would always be way better than the products I spent ages researching. I was like, "why do you do this!!!! Its not fair!!" Lol
I will have get him to pick sulfate and silicone free products for me.

my biggest problem with curly hair is washing it, if i don’t wash it and just wet it in the morning it is sooo sooo knotted so i tend to wash it every night because it is easiest to brush wet and it does not knot as bad. do any of y’all have the same issue or have any tips i can try so my hair isn’t a mess every morning?

You need to set up a hair products shop with a dna tester in it. The customers come in get their dna tested, from that test you know what their porocity, curl type etc is and you could design a hair care package for them. Your videos are great 👍🏽

    • Julia B
      Julia B 2 months ago

There's a company called prose (real life+curly girl did a video) based on over 80 factors that they determine from a very specific questionnaire, they formulate a CUSTOM blended wash conditioner & masque (i think?) ... buuuut i guess you do have to know all those details about your hair first... i do wish there was a test like dna, water, or even soil samples! I'd pluck a few strands & send it off to be analyzed! I'm sure it's just a matter of time, now that the CGM is getting so popular!

what hair type do u have ??? im really curious bc i dont see ppl with hair thats this similar to mine but idk if its considered 2b/2c or 3a

    • Julia B
      Julia B 2 months ago +5

I LIVE the 2b/2c/3a Trifecta STRUGGLE!
The 3 youtubers i watch for my variety of textures:
Curly susie's hair is like a perfect 2c that always behaves for her, but her products are too repair-focused.
Real life+curly girl (alyson) is like my 2b pieces that just won't curl up with the rest of its friends... but she's got an AMAZING wealth of hair science knowledge.
I think Janelle here is closer to a 3a, and only my best few curls match hers (i think she claims to be a 2c/3a).
These are my 3 faves (India Baton has 2b/2c-ish curls too... i just can't standher juvenile fun loving demeanor... curl lessons are serious business to me! Ha ha)

Maybe try some DIY ones? I think if you look for them, you might find them. Search for artisan-made products, vegan markets, sustainable fairs. They tend to make their own products and they're usually sulfate-free and made with only natural products.

Janelle, I watched this video about two months ago at the beginning of my CG journey. I re-watched it today and am so glad I did. So many things I did not understand before make so much sense now. You did an excellent job of putting a lot of info into this one video, but I was so ignorant before I did not understand it all. I would advise everyone to watch this video a few times to give yourself time to let it sink all in. :)

I've been heat styling my hair since middle school so my hair has a lot of years of damage I've recently started my wavy / curly hair Journey and it's really discouraging. Time to specially when my mom says that she doesn't like how it looks it's in a very awkward stage right now in a lot of the pieces are very straight and just weird and ugly I get a lot of frizz and I don't know what to do :( how long will this last????

Do you have any recommendations or suggestions for people who do have to wash their hair daily? I train BJJ (Brazilian jiu jitsu) and the close contact nature of the sport makes it easy to develop staph and other nasty skin conditions if you don't adequatly clean yourself post-training. While my scalp has been loving the switch to the CGM (switching out my medicated shampoo for the Giovanni tea tree line has done wonders) my hair (thick, pixie cut, 2B, dense, low porosity,) is super dry, especially the top and ends, and I'm wondering if the constant cleansing is the reason why. I'm getting a Devacut next week and hope my stylist has some advice but I'd love to hear what you suggest!
