In last week's interview with actor Christopher Plummer, host Scott Simon jokingly asked if he still sings "Edelweiss" once in a while. Several listeners wrote to point out that Plummer's singing was over-dubbed by Bill Lee. In an outtake from the interview edited for time, Plummer explains why the moviemakers decided to insert the voice of another singer.

I remember my violin teacher in the middle of our lesson several years ago told me the last of the von Trapp children passed away that week. I was so devastated, having grown up on this movie thanks to my mum and being very familiar with the incredible story of the family, and this song was the first thing that came to my head. So help me if I don’t raise my own children with this as a lullaby I will have failed as a mother.

I remember watching this as a kid and not knowing the underlying story or the hidden conflicts that were going on all throughout, to me it was just an innocent musical. The fact that the Nazis were coming after the Von Trappe family to separate them by taking the eldest Boys and the Father away to WWII/Hitler Youth. The fact that Leisel's crush Rolf betrayed her and the family to the Germans. The tension in this scene where the Baroness realizes that a lower class Governess, Maria, with no wealth or social status stole away the love of the wealthy man she was to wed, as they were both of the same social class and a good arrangement. The escape over the Alps form the Nazis. All I knew as a child was the Father was super strict, didn't want the oldest daughter dating anyone, wanted his kids to behave like military personnel, wanted his house to be run a certain way, and in the beginning didn't like singing and music. I didn't even think about what happened to the children's Mother and the impact it had on the Captain. I didn't think about the giant leap it took for a failed Nun turned Governess to stand up to an upper class Military man and eventually win his heart with her ways and charms. How taboo a relationship with Maria would've been for the Captain back then. I didn't think the ramifications of the family getting caught were as extreme as going into a prison/concentration camp when I was a child. I didn't know of such things. The innocent scope of youth is forgotten through time and experience but I will always remember watching this with my cousins, singing along, sitting on the living room floor in front of the big backed boxy television, around Christmas time at my Grandmom and Granddad's family get-to-gethers with the whole family all around. Good times.

This is the UNDUBBED version. Not the dubbed version tou see in the movie. I think there is so much more emotion in this version and leisle sounds much stronger too. This is so beautiful.

  • Ultraviolet Morgan

Man... the tension and subtext in this scene I dont think I noticed before. I think Max saw it too and actually reverted to type on purpose to break the tension.

  • Ultraviolet Morgan

Ugg.. the baroness is such a bitch. "To bring my harmonica" she is so condescending. As an adult I notice her constantly eyeing Maria. Then when the daughter starts singing I cant help but think shes probably jealous of her too and thinking nothing would be better than a nice boarding school. Such a horrid woman. I love the cute look he gives Maria at the end and yes Christopher Plummer was super good looking back in the day. Extremely handsome.

It's been at least 8 years since I last watched TSOM damn... I was just doing the dishes and started humming a random tune with hint of various songs from my childhood, I ended up humming this and for the life of me couldn't remember where I heard it from and had only the tune I couldnt remembered the lyrics either but had a hunch that it was from TSOM. Thought it was candle light instead of edelweiss tho so I just searched up 'The Sound of Music lullaby' and ended up here. Honestly this made me teary. This was one of my (and my mom's) favorite movies growing up, I've probably watched it over a thousand times and it was the most watched movie in my house 😂 At 1st I watched it more that I usually would just go spite my sis since she hated it and if I occupied the DVD player it meant that she would either have to watch with me or try to block it out while doing something else to do by herself (TV was in the playroom so it was our designated disaster zone no toys allowed to be left outside the room unless it was like a board game or Uno or if there was an adult) but I ended up really loving the film and she stopped hating it now it's just mild distaste but we both had all the songs memorized back then and would dance & sing along (hey who says you have to hate the songs it didn't matter we would always dance & sing along) *_sigh_* good times I miss those carefree days 😂💜

My father and I used to sing this song together from when I was a teenager to when I came to visit him every time after I moved out from the home. We sang it one last time over the holidays the year he eventually died from cancer. The song will always hold a special place in my heart for the bond it created with me and my dad.

The singer dubbed in matched Christopher Plummer very well. But the overdubbed singer’s vibrato, on the less than two minute clip-as opposed to this 3:23 minute version/- is holding out ends of phrases longer, with vibrato, his diction, his more steady volume-all are different from the 3:23 clip of Edelweiss version. It is just a better smoother version but not blowing it out of the water either. I don’t know what to make of this. We have two different versions going on, I’m fairly convinced of that

  • sean9522
    sean9522 2 months ago

What’s interesting and a little weird about this particular clip. Reportedly Christopher Plummer did not actually sing this song in the movie production and another singer (who sounds like you would expect Christopher Plummer to sound like singing) was overdubbed in. NOW- here’s something. I am a composer and a musician and have heard this performance and the way it is mixed, many many times. THIS is not the Edelweiss performance we have been used to. In fact, and I’m going out on a limb here-I’m going to say-THIS is the actual real Christopher Plummer version. Not quite as good as the overdubbed singer. The vocal is a singer singing who is a little rough, the other version of the actual movie performance does not sound as amateurish as this version. The other version here on RU-clip-the real one-fades abruptly and whites out before the song is finished, and is only barely under two minutes long. Check it out and contrast/ compare. This version here is not as smooth, tone of voice is similar, but this is a weaker performance. sounds much the same as the version here. But you’ll hear a definite difference!

When I first saw this movie when I was six years old with my family I remember I was a little scared of the captain before this scene. I don't know why. perhaps it was because of the way he ran his household. perhaps it was because he did not let his children have fun. this scene totally changed my perspective of him. I knew that he was at heart a loving father.
