Thanks for showing tips and technique for swimming freestyle. I only know how to swim backwards. I want to learn. Not splash around. It wastes too much energy. I will watch and watch then take notes. Then email my self all the smallest details. Then want to use these techniques at the gym pull. I will wear goggles and ear plugs. I quit smoking so hopefully I will not run out of air? Next: Want to learn: ( Freestyle swimming ), ( butterfly swimming ) and ( breast stroke swimming ). What got me interested in swimming is the , You Tube video about Diana Nyad , when at age 64 .She swam from Cuba to Florida. She initially failed four times. Then succeed the fifth time. Cold freezing water, sharks, box jelly fish , the east and west flow of water as she was swimming north. She wrote the book: ( FIND A WAY ). This is very impressive . I just want to learn how to swim from one part of the pool to the other.

In my experience having used both types of machines, there are a few similarities. But the Vasa Trainer is far superior for swim-specific training and it also has a much wider range of resistance options because it has so many ways to change that: Incline of rail, the addition of the bungee cords, pulley system OR the direct pull webbing straps that give double the load at any incline setting, etc. Plus, as a swimmer and triathlete, the leg push-off board on my Vasa Trainer is the real deal. It's awesome for squats, leg plyos, etc. ru-clip.com/video/o0x2JY1EgdU/video.html

It's always been really easy to use my Vasa Trainer and this video helped me see how important it is to keep my legs and feet stretched out longer. I can see how that helps condition the lower back and core muscles while I work on my swim strokes. Some people let their legs just dangle off the back, but that probably doesn't help. One guy I know puts on ankle weights when he does his Vasa and he claims it makes him stronger and he feels that strength transfer when swimming in the pool. Thanks Vasa Trainer!

the Japanese need to build a robot that you can set for all the different arm motions to show how bad form is slower and good form is faster with less energy as it swims in the pool. Not like people are skeptical, but its just so much more believable when you have a proving robot to show everybody; like a science experiment at school.

If people are honest, they will admit that forcing their arm into this unnatural angular shape hurts their shoulder. I've tried it in the pool and it's useful only for short sprints. If you want to swim any distance, forget this painful, unnatural technique. I know a lot of people recommend it but they're all wrong. This woman is obviously an excellent swimmer but her lead arm enters the water way too flat and THAT is why she has to crank her elbow and shoulder into the weird angle. If her arm entered the water at a steeper angle, her hand would already be below her elbow before she even began to think of pulling back on the water column. The steeper entry also facilitates rotation and has the added benefit of pushing the head and body down into the water, thus maintaining a flatter, more streamlined position. And it's much easier on the shoulders and core. Everything about this stroke is awkward and painful. : )

Hi Karlyn - like the video, the pull-up and box explanation - along the lines of something I had been thinking about and trying out, but I am thinking that if you really want max power output you need to have elbow joint angle closed, not at 90 degrees and hands closer to chest whilst fingers still pointing to bottom of pool. For example to lift yourself up unto a wall above head height you would never achieve the power output needed using your arms in the manner shown in this video - not enough power output ?

I am not convinced she is a swimmer based on how she did not keep a high elbow once he tried to make her grab the water / sweep back. You pull the most water through a stroke when you keep your forearm perpendicular to the floor. You also bear the most strength in your pull from this arm position.
