  • Doug Van Dorn
Doug Van Dorn 14 minutes ago

Yep. As a long-time Cub fan and Chicago sports enthusiast, this was a cringey video in terms of the pronunciations. I can't get upset with Simon, he's an English boy living in Prague, so I seriously doubt he's ever heard these names pronounced, or watched much baseball on WGN-TV. (And starting next year, no one will ever watch Cubs baseball on WGN-TV again, but that's another story...) The thing that's really funny to me, though, is -- as noted below -- Bill Veeck's autobiography is in fact entitled "Veeck as in Wreck", so, y'know, you'd think a really, really basic skimming of the source document titles for the research on this video ought to have given even someone who has only spoken English for a few months a pretty good clue at how to pronounce Veeck's name... :D

I was in a car crash (hit by an idiot who ran a red light) that triggered my air bag. I had a cup with a bendy straw (regular straw with an elbow) in it in my lap, and the air bag hit the straw. I can tell this, because it actually hit the straw so fast (air bags deploy pretty much instantaneously) that the flexible plastic actually shattered into several pieces. So I can easily see branches not having any time to flex at all, and just shattering instead.

Has anyone else accessed the "Realm of Karrogitock"? It is fucking unbelievable... The underground city has all the earmarkings of Azzeroth but non of the Trolls... Players can actually USE the third keyboard feature(unlike some unmentioned game consoles) to dredge up demons and wizardry of the highest order... The 8G graphics are also due for an upgrade(can't wait for that) but without the hidden secret key it's all pointless.... I mean who wants to be running around in 11G without a 3keyboard experience... Just saying... 😱

Before I watch this video I wanted to comment that I am actually a very clever boy and I think I might know the answer to this. I remember on QI they're being a similar question if I remember correctly there was a lady that had a very good watch and would sell the correct time and there were people going around knocking on windows with poles at certain times of the morning to wake people up.

I have a memory of what happened to me when I was four. A couple of years ago, my mother gave me a picture of me at that age. When I really looked at it, I realized it was not only completely inappropriate but that was, in fact for sure the man who did it. I don’t know his name but never saw him again. I asked my mom and she couldn’t remember who it was. It’s her fault, but she has Alzheimer’s and still my mom so I still treat her like gold and leave the past in the past.

I found this video very surreal and kind of funny, but it makes perfect sense for those knowing anything about the place and period. Yet, it's kind of sad because of the lack of self-control, disregard for vows, and general unhappiness of the times, pretty much like our times. I think that is why time and again the old BBC love series are so hypnotizing because, especially in that time, status and money were everything and happiness came last, so it is intriguing to see fictitious people who actually love one another fight all odds to get married and secure a future together. You know how it's going to end, but the journey is irresistible.

A lot of the more ancient folks had a lot more money than that. In fact some individuals had so much wealth that we cant even imagine today. I do agree however that it is hard to know exactly how much and therefore might be worth a list on their own. Just as a small example one might think of hamilkar barkas, father of hannibal (the one who crossed the alps with elephants). He conquered huge parts of modern spain and its silver mines and got so unimaginably rich that he funded the entire (you could call it a privat) army that marched against the romans in the second punic war. The army was under the command of his son hannibal after hamilkar died and the war lastet almost 20 years!!
