I live in California and see illegal lane splitting ALL the time; including by the police, CHP and Sheriff. State law says it is only legal up to 30 mph. Not 60, 80 or more. Truth: many drivers hate it because they get scared by the illegal split and how dangerous it is. Those folks also may be the ones who crowd out splitters because they don't approve making it more dangerous. Some do move over in their lane to make room for a splitting rider. For the record, I don't split. I don't support it and do not believe it should be legal. I was riding home yesterday in traffic on the 15 north for 10 miles first gear. Yes, the bike got hot. Yes, I found a spot to safely pull off and let it cool down. It's just part of riding a bike. Yet I made it home safely and so did all the cars around me. My life, my family are more important than risking it splitting. Not sorry if folks don't approve. Deal with it.

I have a 2014 ultra limited and put the whim in when it came out and had nothing but problems. Worked great with one headset but when I paired a second head set nothing but problems, static, shuts off and one etc. Just dealt with it and went back to regular plug in Harley head sets. spent about 3 days with sena tech during bike week and tried all the resets and everything under sun. switched headsets, changed out what whim update everything nothing worked. Aug 2019 bought a. new 19 ultra limited when it came out and put the whim on no problem at all worked great and wife could use the one on 14. did a long 6500 mile trip and worked great. Her's now is a bout 2 years old and mine right at a year. a couple months after we got back from trip went to go to biketober fest. neither bikes headsets work!! What the hell. could not pair any of them would not even come up when you start pairing. tried unplugging the whim and plugging back in pulled fuzes all that nothing worked. When you try to pair it just says "headset" then after several seconds it says pairing failed!! cant wait to see what deal will say when I get back to town. I am thinking a lawsuit needs to be filed!!

Hi Ryan, couple of things. I have the Shoei. Good helmet but I did agree with you on two things. That helmet is noisy. I would never say it’s a quiet helmet. I have two speakers in it for music and it’s cranked all the way up because of the wind noise. Second it fogs up with any type of rain or fog or humidity. I have taken it back to the dealer and they have tried everything to get it to stop but it still fogs up under those wx conditions. I just purchased an Arai and going to see how that helmet is. Enjoy your content.

lee glidewell ..... Hi Lee....yes sir they tried Rain-X. The 2 different guys that were working on it we’re probably going out of their minds trying to figure out how to stop that helmet from fogging up. It’s still a good helmet. Just wind noise and the fog problem. Even with the ARAI on the way I will be using the Shoei. Thanks for the help.

Hey Bruce, when y'all say 'the dealer tried everything', did that include Rain-X anti-fog? Might be worth a shot, it's not expensive. If y'all have already purchased a different helmet, I guess it's a moot point.

Ryan: Thanks for the update. Nothing to report in CO and/or AZ re legislation. As you can see from my CHP picture - I was one; and it was my daily job to split traffic on the So. CA freeway system (I-405, US 101, SR 34, I-5, Sr 170) - in the late 60's and early 70's. My first assigned HD (AMF) bike - out of motor training in Sacto - was a '69 kick start with a heel pedal activated siren! Ahhhh - the good ole days...except for the AMF part; and the bike after that was electric start and siren. Splitting was not taught in motor school because it could not be duplicated in real time. So you were "paired" up with a motor training officer when you got back to your Area office - for 30 days, or more if needed. If you couldn't "cut it" on actual patrol basis, the training officer would recommend your removal from motor duty. So - on my first day of freeway motor patrol (we did not patrol surface streets in those days) - the training officer would spend some off bike time explaining the - his - do's and don'ts of real time enforcement patrolling. My lane splitting training began that first day when we jumped on US 101 and he told me (via our hand held Motorola radio microphone) after a few miles of riding paired - "follow me." It was exhilarating albeit "ass puckering!" So - I had years of splitting experience, and learned to love it...still do, but only when we get back into CA visiting. After I got off CHP motor duty when I transferred to Ventura in late 70's - I never rode a bike again until 2007 when I bought a HD Road King in Tucson AZ - and have been riding HD to this date; I'm 77 years old. We now live in Fort Collins CO - and I'm a member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Group.I agree with Bruce - the biggest splitting danger nowadays is angry/road rage drivers. We don't have any opportunity - legally - splitting in any state except CA; so when we might get into CA on a ride - I have to really ease back into it...little by little. If and when a state does approve splitting - there's going to be a huge learning curve for splitters and for cage drivers to accept m/c splitting past them...in which some will be aggressive in NOT letting splitters through...dangerous for all concerned. The "break-in" period for cagers and splitters is going to be tenuous for states passing legislation allowing splitting.CHP 5891 (Norm)

I ride and lane split in Ca and have been for many years. You talked about many advantages and one more is to keep the rider cool. I ride in the Redding area where the temps get well over 100* F. I can't sit in stopped traffic with protective riding gear on for an extended length of time. Most people I pass on the roadways while lane splitting are very curious and typically pull to the side to allow us spliters to go by. Thanks Ryan for doing the video productions and keep up the good work enforcing the law. One last thing, nail the piss out of the Red Light runners! Those clowns drive me nuts! Be safe, ride strong.

Hey Ryan, This video popped up again for me......I wish New York would allow it too.....I just saw this video of a cop sneaking up on biker in NYC and pull the keys out of the ignition. Good thing I ride a Harley....lol....the cop couldn't stop me from turning the engine back over......Anyway, I just don't understand why everyone has made this SUCH an issue. I tried to start a petition in Congress to pass this into FEDERAL law and put a blog on some biker site and got insulted by people who just don't understand and are such cowards. They think hiding behind the internet makes them invincible but they damn well know they wouldn't speak to someone like that face to face....

Could you do a short video explaining exactly what is the law in Washington right now? I'm under the impression that we can ride along the shoulder when traffic is stopped, which then puts us at the front where traffic is stopped for road work. Last year, I rode to the front of a VERY long traffic back up, and the guy holding the stop/slow sign started yelling at me, to which I told him to step back, calm down, and get over it. He said, "how do you think those people feel about you passing all of them?", and I said "they should have ridden a motorcycle". That didn't help his angry attitude.

    • Ryan Urlacher
      Ryan Urlacher 21 hour ago

  • DFWKen

Highway lanes in my area (DFW) are being squeezed to provide HOV lanes. Where a highway had 4 wide lanes, they've restriped to create FIVE lanes; each lane being about 15% more narrow. Two semi's in adjacent lanes are only a few feet apart. They can make it legal in Texas if they wish; it won't affect my riding. I will choose to not ride between moving vehicles in adjacent lanes. But I WILL go to the shoulder and ride slowly past clogged traffic in some conditions . . . legal or not. Most recent time was a couple of years ago in pouring rain and traffic stopped for as far as the eye could see. I was on the way to a skills competition in Grand Prairie. Sitting stationary in the pouring rain and lightning wasn't on the day's agenda. So I moved to the shoulder and crept along at about 15 mph . . . passing hundreds (maybe a thousand or more) cars and trucks. Like I say, legal or not . . . I felt justified.

I don’t understand why companies limit themselves by offering specific brands for their product. It just limits the amount of customers possibly looking into that particular product. I’m sure they are making money off the partnership but turning off customers at the same time.

Ryan, you mention the visor on the C3 being smother and easier to operate. Others have mentioned the C3 visor doesn’t stay put when not In the fully closed position. Have you seen this issue? I tend to ride with my visor open at least part of the way unless it is cold or raining. I wear a Shoei RF1200 now and I ride with the visor in the first detent from fully closed when it is raining for air circulation. Have you experienced any issues with the C3 Pro shield staying in place while riding with shield partially or fully open? Anyone else using a C3 Pro seen this issue ?

Ryan I just purchased a new helmet and I ruled out the shoei because of that integrated comm system. I want to use the 20 or 30k sena without the added mounting problem. Maybe I'm to picky but I want a comm system that is fully integrated with the Harley boom box.

Ryan Urlacher Thank you for the reply. I just returned from a 2,845 mile trip and experienced the issue at high speed, but after your reply I’m wondering if it could have been due to the new 9” touring style windshield I installed before the trip which stands straight up. Have ridden both. They both do fine in all conditions. Some here at LAB ride SG's and others ride RG's. I prefer the Street Glides for me. If I was a really tall rider, I might prefer the Road Glide. But when it comes to handling at freeway or above speeds, they both do fine. I've had my police Electra on many fast tracks at over 100mph and pegged until she wouldn't go any faster. They handle just fine. We've ridden in extreme winds with both batwing and fixed shark nose. All good......

A few things to mention. The first is that on the Neotech 2, the shield does lock down. The second is that I have installed the Sena 30k on my Neotech 2. I felt the SRL is like getting a 20 and not the latest technology. The third is that Schuberth helmets fit people who have rounder heads. The Neotech 2 is an intermediate oval helmet. So the best thing is to try them on (both of them) at a motorcycle shop before you buy them online. The Schuberth is quieter than the Shoei. Schuberth is known for making quiet helmets. I still wear earplugs on my Neotech 2.

  • DFWKen
    DFWKen 2 days ago

I've been wearing Shuberth C3 and then C3-Pro for many years . . . since the C3 first came out. You like the smooth face shield action. Conversely, I wish the detents were deeper. If I raise the shield 1, 2, or 3 detents up, a gust of wind slams it shut. Happens especially when a large oncoming vehicle whooshes by. I'm constantly having to re-set the face shield where I want it. I think they could do that without making it clunky. ALSO REGARDING THE FACE SHIELD, I wish it had a detent that put it so that it's barely cracked away from the closed position for humidity control. The first detent lets rain come in. The zero detent closes so tightly that it fogs up. A detent between the two would be perfect. And yes, I do use the PinLock shield in inclimate weather. However, the visibility isn't good for me for all-weather. In addition, I've left the PinLock installed on my older C3 for so long that it wallered out the holes! Didn't know it until riding into a cool rain and droplets/fog got trapped between the PinLock and the main face shield. It was horrible! So now, I keep my PinLock in the factory sleeve, padded between the left side of the tourpac and the tourpac liner. But doing this has its own drawbacks. If one rides into rain, the PinLock is stored and not on the helmet. Thus, the almost closed face shield detent would be great. Regarding the neck pad. DON'T CUT IT TO ALLOW A CLAMP-TYPE Bluetooth unit to be fit. You'll ruin the neck pad. The plastic rod depends on rigidity to keep itself pressed into place and the little pins in the end to be seated. Cutting it will destroy that. Don't ask me how I know . . . but I do have a ruined neck pad around here somewhere. And putting the clamp inside the neck pad retainer is really clunky. There's got to be a better way. I'm considering a stick-on base for my Bluetooth unit and drilling a small hole for the speaker/microphone wires to pass. My current C3 Pro is nearing 5 years old, so I'm considering trying the hole since the lifetime of the helmet is getting near the end anyway. That is all. I love my C3 Pro. It's gosh awful quiet. Hardly need ear-plugs with it; especially around town.

This is the best yet. I have been saving for 2 years and decided to go for the WHIM and the 30K Harley Davidson (HD) Sena unit a week ago. Still today there is nothing from HD or anywhere else on the interweb on setting up and configuring headset units to the WHIM in the detail that Ryan goes into. Even the local dealerships have difficulty in explaining and setting things up.

I live in Utah where filtering is now legal. It's the greatest thing ever! I think the restrictions are bullshit though and disregard them a lot of the time. If traffic is bad enough I will just lane split. I have not had any issues other than the occasional motorist beeping at me. The entire US should follow California's example and get with the rest of the world and legalize lane splitting.

  • Nicholas Styant-Browne

I'm a bit late to the game with my comment, but just saw this video. Thank you for such a helpful and comprehensive analysis of Harley warranties. The only thing you don't make clear is the warranty is only voided to the extent the non Harley/Screaming Eagle performance part installed on the bike caused the problem. If you put in a non-Screaming Eagle EFI tuner, but your ABS stops working, your warranty remains good to fix the ABS. Conversely, if there is an engine problem related to the timing, then the warranty may be voided. This is in the terms of both the Harley factory and extended warranties, but more importantly, it is the law that prohibits manufacturers from avoiding warranty liability for a claim that is not caused by the performance modification.

    • Ryan Urlacher
      Ryan Urlacher 7 days ago

I always say, the Magnusson-Moss warranty act is there for consumers. However, if HD does not cover something and a consumer thinks they should, it will be up to the customer to file a lawsuit and hire an expensive Attorney. The case will drag out forever. That's why it doesn't happen very often. It's just too expensive for the consumer. HD has plenty of money and Attorneys.

I went to my local dealer and asked them how much it would cost me to have them install heated grips and they told me 4 hours labor. After watching John Maxwell install, I thought what a bunch of crap. Four hours labor? If you do what Maxwell does with the dog tag chain, shoelace and some electrical wire you can run the wiring in no time. Everything about my local dealership recently has become about massive labor charges. :/ They wanted 2 hours to install new tires on my bike recently and in total were talking over $800.00 for the total tire job. Seriously, I've decided I'm done with them after buying three bikes from them. (sigh) Anyhow keep up the good videos Ryan, you guys rock. I recently installed HD Heated grips on my 2019 Road Glide Special and did it 100% from these videos. Had to view a couple of the updates to get the correct info for the Road Glide but it was pretty simple, and the update for inside wiring really works well. Took me about 1.5 hours start to finish and the vast majority of that was prepping the left grip and switch housing for internal wiring. Never even looked at Harley instructions. It was well worth the cost to purchase the video. My local Harley dealer here in CA quoted me $350 to install the heated grips.

Hahaha, well he tried anyway. My brother did it some 35 years ago, think he was about 15 at the time. I remember he ate almost the whole thing but had like two bites left on the plate and was almost in tears and said, I can't eat any more. My mother told him to put those late two bites in his mouth, or she was gonna whip his ass for being this close. He put them in his mouth, and the plate was cleaned. Promptly after he got the certificate he went in the bathroom and let it loose, lol. I've been in there a few times over the year and did you what you did, a nice 12 ouncer with a cold 12 ouncer, lol.
